Exercise endurance to a symptom-limited maximum was determined with a constant-load exercise test on a cycle ergometer at a work rate equal to 75% of the previously determined Wmax. Patients were instructed to exercise for as long as possible. They were told to stop exercise only when dyspnea became intolerable or the required pedaling rate (60/min.) could not be kept up due to leg fatigue. Encouragement was given every 2 minutes. If exercise endurance exceeded 15 minutes, the observer terminated the test. Test duration longer than 15 minutes was anticipated to become boring to subjects and may be terminated for nonphysiological reasons. Finally, exercise endurance on a cycle ergometer with a workload of ± 75% of Wmax in the healthy elderly does not, on average, exceed 15 minutes
