The COPD-SMI is a specific self-management interview. This structured 15-min interview comprised three hypothetical scenarios based on stages of an evolving exacerbation, i.e., maintenance when well, early exacerbation and severe exacerbation. The scenario method has previously been used to assess emotionally loaden decision making in difficult to access situations. All participants were read the same three scenarios, however, their specific disease characteristics were included. After each scenario was read, participants were assessed on the same 13 key areas of self-management behaviour for all three scenarios.
