A device used to monitor medication adherence. The medication event monitoring system (MEMS) is a cap that fits on standard medicine bottles and records the time and date each time the bottle is opened and closed. It is assumed that each cap opening represents a patient taking the correct medication from the bottle. MEMS is currently regarded as the gold standard to measure adherence.
